Renter Statewide Criminal Repository Search
All states have a central repository (database) they use to track known criminals. These state repository criminal record databases are made available to the public by some states but not all. The counties as well as police and other state law enforcement agencies submit criminal records to state’s repository criminal record database. The data submitted varies by state and some states do a better job in maintaining their state repository criminal record histories than others. It depends on which agencies report and how well they maintain the criminal information determines the value of the state repository criminal records for background screening. Of course the other issue at hand is the retrieval the state repository criminal records. Some states do not give access at all to the state repository criminal records, others give access only with fingerprints, some states need a notarized release, and then still others take weeks to get the state criminal records released even if the request is properly submitted. Our standard to conduct tenant screening background check using state repository criminal record information is:
- Be available for tenant screening
- Available within reasonable time frame averaging 5 working days or less
- Updated with county records within 4 weeks.
- Be compete, having both felony and misdemeanor convictions
All background screening must have a release signed by the subject to whom the search applies. Those states marked with an asterisk require a special release, while a double asterisk indicates the special release needs to be notarized.
